Common Cbus Faults

Switch’s flashing on and off and not responding. LED light fittings not fully turning off. LED lights flashing off and on. Lights not responding when turned on at a switch. Touchscreens not sending out commands. Lights turning on randomly.

These are the day-to-day faults we come across and can help you with. Many of them can be identified in an hour or two with the correct testing procedures. The size of the house and the number of Cbus products and their locations, can make this easier or harder, however.

The most common problem we come across are power supplies built into the main Cbus relay and dimmer modules, failing completely or failing randomly for minutes or even seconds at a time.

In a Cbus “network”, every component is connected and capable of “corrupting” the network that can cause false communications, commands and outcomes. Depending on how well the original installers wired and connected the installation can determine how much this hinders or helps the fault-finding process.

Yes, IT Does Breakdown

Just like anything else in life that is mechanical or electrical, Cbus does breakdown sometimes. When it does, you need someone who has experience and the right knowledge on how to fix it. At Connect Power & Cabling we have become specialist and experts in the repairing of Cbus systems.

We have been installing C Bus for some 28 years now and have hundreds of jobs in our database that we have initially done or been to for upgrading, to fix or repair. Cbus is in thousands of homes or businesses in Australia and overseas and really the number of failures is low considering just how much of the product is out there.

Not all Clipsal C Bus installers or programmers are the same. Some rarely get to work on Cbus, some are just electricians who want to “get into it”, some are AV or IT technicians who do it as a side to their normal day to day work and some are only Cbus programmers and do not understand how to fix it when something goes wrong. When it does go faulty, electrical connections and electrical fault finding are involved. You need someone who is also a licensed electrician with extensive Cbus experience to assist.

At Connect Power & Cabling, we are electrical contractors, licensed electricians and are certified Clipsal/Schneider partners for the Cbus range of products through their EcoXpert programme.

What’s our experience with C-Bus?

We have been working with Cbus for some 28 years now but the first few years did not see us working constantly with Cbus. 22 years though we pretty much started working monthly with it and probably in the last 20 years of that, working with it every week in some form or another.

That is a lot of experience! Many of these jobs have been new homes, with many of them being extensive large homes on the Gold Coast.

The Most Important Cbus Indicator

In the video below, we show the most important indicator light on the CBus system. This light tells you the health of your CBus system.

The indicator with the word C-Bus next to it, which is found on the dimmer, relay and other modules, should never be flashing. The flashing may be very slow, randomly or very fast. In all cases, this means that the C-Bus “network” has an issue and that there is “corruption” on it. This corruption will stop, or interfere, with CBus communication or “comms”. This can cause all manner of issues and may be caused by several things.

A very slow flash, say once every few minutes, may see your CBus seemingly fine most of the time. But the faster and more erratic the flashing is, CBus will not be able to communicate effectively or at all. There really is nothing you can do yourself to get over this issue. It is rarely a software or programming issue but normally to do with a hardware fault. If this is happening, it’s time to call us.

Some Of Our Projects

We also did the first C-Bus approved residential high rise on the Gold Coast, a luxury town house development in Toowong in Brisbane. Some of our commercial jobs have been a 75 acre nursery completely controlled and run through Cbus with 10 Cbus networks over fibre optic controlled by a Cbus server via 40inch touchscreens. Four renovated office blocks for the Gold Coast City Council that have Cbus controlling the lighting for energy efficiency requirements.

We have even been to Japan to do and large restaurant in Yokohama where we did the lighting design and control system with C-Bus.

Many of our clients have been with us a long time as well. We recently had a client who bought a large 7200sqm existing home at Sanctuary Cove that didn’t have Cbus and it was a frustrating having to remember and control the lighting from large keypads with no identification and walking all over the house to turn lights off and on in different areas.

We rewired all the common areas and extensive outside lighting onto Cbus where they could have switches placed and labelled exactly how the wanted with features like “Goodnight” buttons that could turn all those lights off from their bedroom no matter where they were turned on from.
